He added a final-round 72 around the East Course at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington GC to the 75 he carded on Saturday.

“I played my best golf tee to green in the first two rounds in a long time,” said the 30-year-old, who shot 70 on the West Course on Thursday and 69 on the East a day later. “Then I played okay over the weekend, but my putter was cold.

“I felt to lose the pace and on faster-sloped greens it becomes tricky.”

He got off a bright start on Sunday by birdieing the first, stumbled at the fifth with a bogey, but also birdied the sixth to be out in one under.

The inward nine included successive bogeys at 13 and 14 and a birdie at 17 - for the second consecutive day - as the Woodsome Hall player finished the tournament on one under (70 69 75 72).

“Never a good sign that it’s still breakfast when you’ve played,” he added, a comment on having been one of the fourth round’s earliest starters.

“But I get to go home to my girls and the snow now. It’s going to be great to enjoy the snow with the kids.”

Hanson and his wife, Laura, have two young daughters, Jessica and Olivia.

“I’m looking forward to three weeks at home, to patch up a few areas of my game, and then I’m back out to South Africa for the Tshwane Open (in Pretoria).”

This was his fourth event after winning his European Tour card and he has made the cut in three, missing out by just one in the Australian PGA before Christmas.

He had 16 birdies over the four days, but whereas he had only four bogeys during Thursday and Friday he had nine plus one double bogey over the weekend.
