Johnson faces anxious wait over Wilkinson

England manager Martin Johnson admitted he is concerned over the fitness of talisman Jonny Wilkinson as thoughts turn to this weekend’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final against France.

Wilkinson, who was replaced near the end of England’s 16-12 victory over Scotland on Saturday, had a scan on his right forearm.

The results were inconclusive and the England medics need another day at least to determine the extent of the injury.

Johnson said: “Jonny got scanned last night on his upper forearm, elbow region.

“That didn’t show anything and while that is good news, obviously at this point in the tournament it is a little bit of a worry. We need another day to see where he is and whether he will be available for the weekend.” Centre Mike Tindall has suffered a dead leg and England will wait another 24 hours before deciding when he can return to training.

England’s camp were once again hit with headlines for all the wrong reasons yesterday as national newspapers revealed how a female hotel employee had made a complaint against three of the World Cup squad in New Zealand. England’s qualification for the quarter-finals was somewhat overshadowed by more lurid off-the-field headlines, which have once again tarnished the team’s image and Johnson confirmed yesterday that James Haskell, Dylan Hartley and Chris Ashton had been made to formally apologise to the Dunedin hotel worker after she was reportedly teased with lewd comments.

News of the complaint follows the release of CCTV footage of the players enjoying a boozy night out in Queenstown.
