First, Sam Northeast was lbw to David Wainwright before Martin van Jaarsveld was caught behind top-edging a hook off Tim Bresnan.

Darren Stevens (51 no) and James Hockley added 64 for the sixth wicket in 14 overs before Hockley miscued a pull off Ajmal Shahzad and was caught by Bresnan at deep mid-wicket.

James Tredwell (3) is the other not out batsman at the break.

The visitors reduced the home side to 90-3 after Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale lost the toss.

Yorkshire - unchanged from their victory over Somerset at Headingley - struck the first blow in the eighth over when Ajmal Shahzad had Robert Key caught behind for five.

Kent recovered well to reach 74-1 before fellow opener Joe Denly rather gave his wicket away, driving a delivery from left-arm spinner David Wainwright to Joe Sayers at cover.

It was Wainwright's fourth ball from the Pavilion End and Denly was on his way for 32.

Yorkshire picked up a third wicket when Tim Bresnan bowled Geraint Jones for 28 with the total on 78, the former England wicketkeeper chopping on.
