King arrives to add power to Steelers

Sheffield Steelers’ player-coach Ryan Finnerty believes new forward Colt King will quickly become a firm favourite at the Motorpoint Arena next season.

The 29-year-old, from Calgary, was drafted in the fourth round by NHL side Colorado Avalanche in 2001, but has spent the majority of his professional career in North America’s various third tier leagues.

He will arrive in South Yorkshire having spent last season with CHL outfit Rapid City Rush where he posted 49 points, including 18 goals.

The previous season he posted 56 points, including 29 goals, as the Rush marched towards the 2009-10 league championship.

“He was my No 1 summer target and the first guy I thought of when I took over in Sheffield,” said Finnerty. “This guy will be a star and a huge fan favourite – he will be a huge addition for us.”

“I think our team will play bigger, tougher and more fiesty with him on it. I think you can see the direction I want to go - hard-working, strong, aggressive, in-your-face type hockey.”
