Kirk and Humberstone triumph to lead Yorkshire to county title

Yorkshire won the women's competition and their men were third when the Inter Counties Championships were concluded at Bedford yesterday.

Sam Ellis (City of Sheffield) won the 800m, toying with the opposition before moving ahead in the final stages. In a tactical race the time was slow, 1:52.86, but Ellis is showing signs of regaining the form which gave him a European bronze medal in this event.

Rhian Hastey, Yorkshire's second string, finished sixth in 1:55.40.

The mile was also a high scoring event for Yorkshire, Wakefield's Jack Hallas finishing second in 4:08.96.

Todd Marshall (City of Sheffield) was fourth in the 200m (21.89), his Sheffield team-mate Steve Garrett was fifth in the 400m hurdles (52.85) and Paul Allsopp (City of York) was seventh in the javelin (62.88).

In the women's events there was a gold medal for Skyrac's Laura Kirk in the 1,500m. A former junior international, Kirk has started the season superbly with fast times at 800m and 1,500m. In blustery conditions the first lap was slow but Kirk ran a perfect tactical race, asserting her authority in the last 300m to win in 4:27.0. Sheffield-based Kay Humberstone won the high jump for Yorkshire with 1.75.

Yorkshire champion Louise Bloor (Trafford) was third in the 100m (11.74). Leeds Metropolitan University student Hannah Evenden followed her first-day hammer victory with fifth place in both the shot (13.03) and discus (45.26) while Sheffield pair Katie Sockett (63.14) and Sophie Brown (11.71) were seventh in the 400m hurdles and triple jump respectively.
