Koyander launches 2014 Olympic bid from Sheffield

HIGHLY-RATED Olympian and professional freestyle mogul skiier Ellie Koyander,19, has selected a top Sheffield sports centre as her training base for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia.

Fresh from the slopes of Vancouver, the talented Derbyshire youngster has opted for Ponds Forge International Sports Centre as she prepares for future Olympic gold.

Koyander, who began skiing at just 18 months, commences her Yorkshire schedule when she returns from her current coaching programme in Colorado, USA.

"At my level it's really important to train when I'm home in the UK and maintain my fitness," said Koyander, who claimed a personal best in Canada in February.

"Ponds Forge is the perfect centre as I can train different areas of my body by using all of the top facilities including the spin bikes, cross trainer and the large pool – which all keeps me at peak condition to help with my skiing."

Ponds Forge will also provide Koyander with the facilities she needs for success in next season's FIS Freestyle World Cup, and the World Ski Championships in 2011.

With the Steel City offering such leading services, Koyander believes the future looks bright for winter sports.

She said: "Sheffield's sporting facilities are fantastic and we are so lucky to have world-class venues like Ponds Forge and iceSheffield. They are really helping to grow and develop winter sports by supporting elite athletes in their quest for success but also encouraging community involvement at a grassroots level through schemes such as Learn to Skate at iceSheffield."
