Kyle Edmund to face former world junior star in Australian Open

The promising 21-year-old from Yorkshire won two junior grand slam doubles titles at the 2012 US Open and the 2013 French Open, and aims to continue forging a career in the singles senior ranks in Melbourne.

Edmund entered the Qatar Open qualifying draw at the start of the year and progressed through the qualifying tournament with straight-sets wins over Andrea Arnaboldi and Radu Albot.

His opponent for the first round, 23-year-old Dzumhur, was ranked junior world No 3 and his career-best ranking of 77 makes him the highest ever ranked player competing for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He is also the first male player to ever represent Bosnia and Herzegovina in the main draw of any Grand Slam tournament.

Edmund, the British No 3, sits behind Alijaz Bedene and number one, Andy Murray.

Andy Murray will play Germany’s talented 18-year-old. Alexander Zverev in the first round of the competition.

Last year, Zverev beat world number 12 Kevin Anderson in Washington, the destructive South African who knocked Murray out of the US Open.

Murray is bidding to clinch a third grand slam title and his first in Melbourne.

British No 2 Bedene will open up against America’s world No 32 Steve Johnson.

In the women’s draw, Britain’s Johanna Konta and Heather Watson were both handed tough opening ties.

Konta, who enjoyed a superb breakthrough season in 2015, is drawn with seven-time major champion Venus Williams, while Watson will take on world No 59 Timea Babos.

Watson lost to the Hungarian in three sets at Cincinnati last year.
