Ladies to take a break

Ladies Are Forever is set for a well-deserved break after finishing third in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot.

North Yorkshire trainer Geoff Oldroyd's charge was just half a length behind Maqaasid in the Group Two after breezing home in a Beverley maiden on her racecourse bow in May.

"We're probably going to give her 12 weeks off now," said owner Reg Bond.

"She is only just two – she was a May foal – so we're giving her a bit of a break now.

"We might see her once more this year, but if not she'll make a lovely three-year-old.

"We thought we had a pretty good chance at Ascot and it's a dream come true."

While connections have yet to make any plans for the remainder of the current season, Bond is eyeing a Classic tilt next term.

"I think she'll get the Guineas trip. That's mine (ambition) but I don't know what Geoff will be doing," he added.

Clive Cox could not be happier with Xtension as his star colt prepares for a trip across the channel to contest the Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly.

The three-year-old has shaped with a good deal of promise on his first couple of starts this season in Classic company, grabbing fourth in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and fifth in the Irish equivalent.

Cox purposely bypassed Royal Ascot with a view to tackling Sunday's prize and he hopes it will be a plan which pays dividends.

"He goes to France on Sunday and we've been very pleased with his efforts so far this season," said Cox.

"It's obviously a competitive race with the likes of Dick Turpin and the French Derby winner (Lope De Vega) both likely runners I believe.

"At least there is no Canford Cliffs to contend with. We didn't go to Royal Ascot for that reason and our horse is very fresh and well in himself.

" I think he's proved he's a worthy Group One performer and I'm sure his turn will come."
