johnstone’s paint trophy

Leading scorer Adam Le Fondre struck again as Rotherham United booked their place in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at the expense of Lincoln City.

The striker, monitored by several clubs up until last night’s transfer deadline, bagged his sixth goal of the season just after half-time to send Ronnie Moore’s men through.

It was the Imps’ second defeat at Don Valley Stadium in less than a month, having lost there on the opening game of the league season.

Le Fondre was on the mark that day and he repeated the feat two minutes into the second half albeit fortuitously, his shot from 20-yards taking a deflection which wrong-footed goalkeeper Joe Anyon.

Lincoln were plucky opponents but their best chance came when Millers’ centre-half Ryan Cresswell nearly chested the ball beyond goalkeeper Jamie Annerson, who impressed with a good save.

Cresswell went close to doubling Rotherham’s lead from close range while Anyon denied Le Fondre a second goal when saving with his legs.

Kevin Ellison had a header saved by Anyon and the Rotherham man made a timely challenge on Cian Hughton when he threatened at the other end.
