Leeds Rhinos win race for Maori star Hauraki

LEEDS RHINOS have won the race to sign highly-rated New Zealand Maori star Weller Hauraki from Crusaders RL.

The fearsome second-row, enjoyed a fine debut season in Super League with the Welsh club this year and Leeds have fought over interest from s host of their rivals to capture him on a three-year contract.

Former Parramatta ace Hauraki, 25, could have returned to the NRL but instead fills Leeds' overseas quota and replaces Greg Eastwood who recently re-joined Canterbury Bulldogs.

"We are delighted to be adding such an outstanding player to our squad," said Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington.

"Weller handled the transition from NRL to Super League really well last season with the Crusaders and his explosive running and tough defence will help the team."

Hauraki starts pre-season training on Monday and has been handed the No 20 jersey at Headingley.
