Leeds United v Scunthorpe United: Leeds keep faith in Nunez with new contract

Championship: Simon GRAYSON believes Ramon Nunez still has a part to play for Leeds United this season despite having made just two fleeting appearances from the bench since joining last summer.

The Honduran international this week signed a contract extension to keep him at Elland Road until the end of the campaign.

Nunez, who joined as a free agent last August, is away with Honduras so will not feature today against Scunthorpe United but Grayson still insists the midfielder can help the Yorkshire club's promotion push.

The United manager said: "Ramon is a talented player. His first-team options have been limited. At the moment, he is away with Honduras and that, together with the form the team has been showing recently, makes it very hard to break into the team.

"But he is learning and developing. He is also understanding the English game more. We felt there was enough ability to have a look for a longer period of time. So, we have agreed a deal until the end of the season.

"I am sure he will be in and around the squad a bit more than he has been. It has been hard so far due to the other players doing so well. We have a lot of good footballers here and you have to be patient.

"Ramon is aware of that and has adjusted well to it."

United's focus today is a return to winning ways after a five-game run that has brought four draws and a defeat to promotion rivals Cardiff City.

Leeds triumphed 4-1 against Scunthorpe back in October, a result that sparked a 12-game unbeaten run for Grayson's men.

He said: "It is ironic that we lost to Cardiff and then started a long unbeaten run against Scunthorpe. Hopefully, that can happen again. It will be tough but we are playing with a lot of confidence and belief. We believe we can start a new run."

The Iron arrive at Elland Road with a bizarre record that reads just one league win on home soil at Glanford Park and six on the road.

Grayson added: "It is a unique situation. Scunthorpe's record shows they are hard to beat, are determined and are resolute. They have some good players who are capable of winning matches for them. It is strange how from time to time a team can feel more comfortable away from home."

United have re-signed full-back George McCartney on loan from Sunderland until the end of the season.
