London Scottish 14 Leeds Carnegie 37: Away day joy at long last for Edwards and Leeds

Leeds Carnegie finally secured their first away win of the season and moved into the top four of the Championship with a hard-earned bonus-point victory.

Diccon Edwards’s side had lost their previous four away games but got off the mark in style.

They hit the front thanks to a spectacular try finished off by winger David Doherty. Forward Richard Beck made the initial break from a lineout before great support play by scrum-half James Doherty kept the move going, and a well-timed run from the winger took him through a gap.

Ford added the conversion and then doubled the lead when tight, controlled play from the forwards was allied to good handling from the backline to create a gap out wide for Oli Goss to score his first try for the club.

Ford extended the lead with a penalty as the visitors looked to build a score. Leeds were reduced to14 men when Goss was sin-binned and the home side took advantage to cross for their first try through PJ Gidlow after Ford had kicked a second penalty.

Phil Godman missed a third penalty just before half-time while Ford kept up his impressive form to extend the visitors’ lead at the start of the second half. Chevvy Pennycook got a try back for the home side after Leeds had a clearing kick blocked but that was as close as the Exiles got.

Goss created a third try with a fine break on halfway, supported by Fred Burdon and Joe Graham, with the latter putting Rob Baldwin in between the posts.

Leeds were reduced to 14 men again when Mike Myerscough was sin-binned following a string of penalties on their own line. However, Leeds rallied and got the try bonus point when David Doherty dived in at the corner.

Edwards said: “I challenged the players at half-time about what we wanted to get from the game. We are too good a side to keep letting teams back into games.

“I was pleased the players got the rewards for their efforts,” he added.
