Luther Burrell back in England's Six Nations training squad

A concussion suffered by fringe player Ollie Devoto in Bath’s defeat by Wasps on Saturday has seen him been replaced in the 32-man squad that has gathered at the team’s Surrey training camp by Burrell.

Despite being a regular for both the 2014 and 2015 RBS Six Nations campaigns, the 27-year-old Northampton Saints centre was overlooked for the 31-man World Cup squad by Eddie Jones’s predecessor, Stuart Lancaster, in favour of fellow centres Henry Slade and Sam Burgess.

Burrell kept his own counsel until after the failure of England to make it out of the group phase eventually led to lancaster being sacked.

But, in November, Burrell broke his silence.

““He let me down,” said Burrell, speaking to the media for the first time since his omission from the squad. “That is how I feel about him. I have known Stuart a long time. I have a huge amount of respect for the bloke, what he’s done and what he has achieved.

“I didn’t think I had done anything to justify not getting selected. That was one of the most heart-breaking things, because I had trained well throughout the summer and I played well in the jersey.”

Also of concern for England is the dislocated shoulder suffered by Josh Beaumont in Sale’s defeat at Worcester and the No 8 is unlikely to play any further part in England’s championship.

“Luther Burrell (Northampton Saints) replaces Ollie Devoto (Bath Rugby), who suffered concussion playing for his club on Saturday,” said an RFU statement.

“Josh Beaumont sustained a dislocated shoulder during his game for Sale Sharks against Worcester Warriors on Saturday and will not join up with the squad.”
