Malton's Fahey tests water in the Darley July Cup

The four-year-old has only lost one of his eight outings to date, a Group Two in Ireland, but he was only beaten a length-and-a-quarter.

He got back to winning ways at Salisbury, beating the smart Danzeno, and will now test the water at the highest level.

“It was a messy race in Ireland, a 14-1 shot beat a 12-1 shot and a 10-1 shot and there were only seven runners,” said Fahey.

“He wasn’t beaten far and the ground was a bit dead for him, we’ve loads of excuses but he’s bounced back and he’s won so we’ll look forward.

“He won a Listed race and I think everyone thought he should have won it easier, but it was more like a Group Two than a Listed. He came through that with flying colours.

“He’s rated 112, there aren’t many places to go so we’ll probably chuck him in the July Cup and see how he goes.

“It’s tough when they get up there, the better the horse the less options they have.”

Another smart sprinter at the Malton yard is Donjuan Triumphant but he will have a break after beating only one home, despite not being beaten that far, in the Commonwealth Cup.

“I was a bit disappointed. We got a run into him in the Sandy Lane but he had quite a hard race and to be fair to Ryan (Moore) he said that.,” Fahey told At The Races.

“We didn’t have Ascot in our minds because we didn’t think we’d get his ground but we got sucked into it when the rain came.

“He had a tough race at Haydock and I’m sure he’ll bounce back. Quiet Reflection is exceptionally good but I just feel we bounced after Haydock.

“Ryan told us not to rush back but we got sucked in.

“He’ll probably have a little break now, he didn’t do well over the winter. He looks well now but trainer error at Ascot knocked him back.

“Something like the Maurice de Gheest, we’ll aim there and there are plenty of races at the back-end when he should get his ground.”
