‘Massive games’ on horizon for Knights

CLIVE GRIFFITHS says the promotion run-in starts now for
National One table-toppers Doncaster Knights.

The Castle Park outfit’s director of rugby has also demanded his players regain their consistency if they are to finish the job and book an instant return to the Championship.

Doncaster have a three-point lead over Rosslyn Park, with Fylde and Esher looking as if their promotion chase is over.

The Knights have lost four of their 20 games to date, with all of those coming in the last three months, and, with 10 matches to go, they know there is no margin for error.

Griffiths said: “We’ve got some massive games on the horizon, starting this weekend against Loughborough.

“Hopefully, we should have a few more bodies back to help us.

“We’re fighting for every point now, whether that’s points on the scoreboard, bonus points or losing bonus points.

“There’s 10 games to go. That’s 50 points still on offer, so there’s a long way to go.

“I just hope we can get that consistency back that we had in our first seven games, before the injuries started to mount up.”

Welshman Griffiths is hoping to be able to bolster a squad ravaged by injuries this season before the division’s transfer deadline of February 28.

“I’m hoping to get some people in for the final push before the transfer deadline,” said Griffiths.

“It’s easier said than done, but I’m trying.”

Former England wing Dan Scarbrough is in the Wharfedale team that travels to Coventry in National One.

Having completed an unlikely double over Esher, the sixth-placed Greens will be looking for a similar outcome from their return fixture with the Midlands club, who they beat 38-26 in October.

They will have to do so without the services of the suspended Rob Baldwin, Dan Stockdale and Richard Rhodes.

Alex Powell, Chris Howick and Luke Cole come in.

Fresh from their draw at Blaydon – only the second time this season they have avoided defeat – Hull Ionians welcome Old Albanian to Bratingham Park.
