Boro created far more than in their previous game - a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United - but were made to pay for their lack of composure in front of goal.

The Teessiders have managed just two goals in their opening four league fixtures and must improve significantly if they are to justify their tag as pre-season promotion favourites.

HULL City suffered yet another away day disappointment in the absence of manager Nigel Pearson.

The Tigers were beaten 3-1 by Yorkshire neighbours Doncaster Rovers and have now gone 29 games without a victory away from home.

Manager Pearson was unable to attend the game after spending Friday night in hospital following a health scare.

A statement from the Tigers said the former Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough defender, 47, was expected to return home on Saturday night and return to work on Monday.

Goals from Martin Woods, Billy Sharp (penalty), and James Coppinger secured the points after Nick Barmby had levelled in the first half.

Woods had put Rovers ahead with a header after just 65 seconds before Barmby, who had not scored since January 2009, levelled after nine minutes.

Sharp's penalty restored Rovers' lead just before the break after defender Liam Cooper was adjudged to have handled at a corner.

Coppinger wrapped things up for Rovers in the 70th minute with a neat finish after exchanging passes with Woods.

Australian winger Richard Garcia was denied a late consolation for Hull when his header was hacked off the line by James O'Connor.

Preston had their moments in a tight contest but a second-half pile-driver from the French defender proved decisive.

The victory lifts United out of the early season relegation zone, while Darren Ferguson's North End have now lost three of their opening four games and are without a win on the road since January.

Watford 0 Leeds United 1

LEEDS captain Richard Naylor marked his 450th career appearance with the only goal at Vicarage Road as the visitors ended Watford's unbeaten start to the new npower Championship season.

The 33-year-old was in the right place at the right time after just six minutes to prod home the 45th goal of his career and keep Leeds' fine start to the campaign going.

The former Ipswich man's strike was one of just a few noteworthy incidents, with quality in short supply.

Large parts of the game were spent with both sides trading long balls and, short of a handful of effort from just inside the area, Watford rarely looked like recovering from their early setback.

A PAUL WARNE header on the stroke of half-time was enough to give the Millers three points at Hereford.

In the first half, Rotherham goalkeeper Andy Warrington did well to keep out James McQuilkin and Sean Canham.

Just before the break, Warne gave the visitors the lead after heading home an Adam Le Fondre cross.

Hereford pushed for an equaliser, but Stuart Fleetwood missed the best opportunity to level when he fired wide from close range, allowing Ronnie Moore's side to hold out for a deserved victory.
