Coventry had a good chance to equalise at the end but Aron Gunnarsson fired over when clean through as Barnsley held out for the win which moved them eight points clear of the bottom three.

Portsmouth 2 Hull 3

Matty Fryatt struck on his debut for Hull as the Tigers rode their luck to pull off the perfect smash-and-grab raid at crisis club Portsmouth in the npower Championship.

Hull, now unbeaten in eight away league matches, had opened the scoring through Jimmy Bullard's 21st-minute penalty after Cameron Stewart had been brought down.

Pompey deservedly drew level early in the second half through Liam Lawrence, who picked himself up to convert from the spot after being tripped by Hull defender Anthony Gerrard.

Hull, forced to defend doggedly for long periods, broke away again in the 69th minute and Fryatt put them back in front and grabbed a two-goal cushion through Nick Barmby in the 72nd minute.

Halford headed home with 14 minutes left, but Steve Cotterill's side could not force what would have been a deserved equaliser.

Rob Kozluk struck in the sixth minute of stoppage time to salvage a point for Sheffield United after Billy Sharp's second-half double threatened to hand 10-man Doncaster victory.

When Rovers defender Dennis Souza received his second yellow card in the 58th minute, the stage was set for United to emerge victorious on Micky Adams' home bow at Bramall Lane.

The boyhood Blades supporter, 49, was last week handed a two-and-a-half year deal as successor to Gary Speed.

Yet Sharp, another lifelong United fan who failed to sparkle during his own time at Bramall Lane, opened the scoring in the 66th minute and rifled home a second from the penalty spot eight minutes later to put Doncaster 2-0 up.
