Alan Irvine celebrated his first match in charge at Sheffield Wednesday with a derby victory over Barnsley at Oakwell in the Championship.

Hull City scrapped for a goalless draw at Tottenham in the Premier League, goalkeeper Boaz Myhill the star for the Tigers.

In the Championship, there were victories for Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers to continue their good runs.

But Leeds United suffered a rare League One defeat, crashing away to Exeter, but a Jordan Rhodes double earned Huddersfield a win against Southend.

Bradford City and Rotherham United were forced to postpone their League Two matches after the big thaw caused waterlogged pitches.

In-form York City cruised to a 4-1 Blue Square Premier win over Hayes and Yeading.

Boaz Myhill kept the Tigers in the game in the first half with several good saves as the Tigers held on for a point.

Championship

Barnsley 1 Sheffield Wednesday 2

Tommy Spurr put the Owls ahead early on, hooking home Michael Gray's corner, but Emil Hallfredsson equalised for the Tykes. Jermaine Johnson grabbed the Owls' winner.

Doncaster Rovers 2 Watford 1

There were no goals in the first half at the Keepmoat Stadium. But Dean Shiels broke the deadlock on 50 minutes for a deserved lead. Gareth Roberts added a second goal for Rovers with seven minutes remaining, before Heidar Helguson reduced the deficit from the penalty spot.

Sheffield United 1 Middlesbrough 0

Boro held Kevin Blackwell's Blades in the first 45 minutes, but Richard Cresswell broke the deadlock with a header at the start of the second half.

United were behind after just four minutes, Ryan Harley netting from an Exeter corner to silence the visiting fans before adding a second on 83 minutes.

Huddersfield Town 2 Southend United 1

Town's top scorer Jordan Rhodes broke the deadlock on 44 minutes, before doubling the lead on 63 minutes. Scott Spencer grabbed a late consolation.

York City 4 Hayes and Yeading 1

Chris Carruthers put the Minstermen ahead after 25 minutes, before Richard Brodie doubled their advantage on 47 minutes. Hayes went down to 10 men when Tom Cadmore was red carded and Brodie made it 3-0 on 58 minutes. Kevin Gall added a fourth on 83 minutes before Scott Fitzgerald replied late on.
