Matthew avoids repeat upset at hands of Momen

NICK Matthew exacted a timely revenge over Egypt’s Tarek Momen to continue his defence of the World Open men’s title in Rotterdam.

Last month, Sheffield’s world No 1 suffered a shock defeat at the hands of the 23-year-old in the Qatar Classic, forcing the Yorkshireman to return home early at the second round stage.

But the 31-year-old made sure there was no repeat when he earned a place in the last 16, although he was on court for 47 minutes before emerging triumphant with a 11-4, 11-9, 11-4 victory.

James Willstrop marked his elevation to world No 3 with a victory, although he wasn’t given a full workout after second round opponent Shahier Razik, from Canada, was forced to retire early in the second game through injury.

In the women’s draw, Harrogate’s Jenny Duncalf negotiated her way through to the second round after seeing off the challenge of Denmark’s Line hansen.

The world No 2, determined on justifying her ranking by reaching the final, came through 11/9, 12/10, 11/7.
