Matthew moves on quickly after surprise loss

NICK Matthew quickly switched his focus to the next challenge following his early exit from the Kuwait PSA Cup.

The world No 2, from Sheffield, was beaten 11-6 11-6 12-10 by fellow Englishman Daryl Selby, missing out on a quarter-final place in a PSA tour event for the first time since November 2011, when he lost in the second round of the Qatar Classic.

While frustrated at a number of questionable calls, Matthew was quick to praise his opponent.

“Daryl played very well,” said Matthew, “He is not as fit as he would like at the moment so he slowed the pace down beautifully and frustrated me.

“But it’s a big push for the Canary Wharf Classic now (which starts in London on Saturday) and then preparation for the British Open (in May) which is my biggest goal this year.”

Elsewhere at the Qadsia Club, third seed James Willstrop, from Leeds, booked a quarter-final match-up with Egypt’s Karim Darwish after beating Tarek Momen 11-7 11-5 11-4.

Darwish, seeded fifth, saw off the challenge of France’s Mathieu Castagnet 12-10 11-7 5-11 11-6 in their third-round match.

“I just managed to get through,” said Willstrop after his defeat of Momen. “It was a tough battle so I couldn’t be more pleased to beat somebody of his calibre.”
