Maximum rewards for in-form Otley but Huddersfield struggle

Otley find themselves one of three sides with maximum points but there will be disappointment for letting Stockport back into the game.

The half-time score of 24-7 in no way reflected their superiority before a profligate second-half saw them leak four tries whilst always looking the better side.

Ben Cooper kicked penalties in the first and last minutes, these providing the difference and he also converted four of the five tries. It was no surprise when centre Tom Rock went over on eight minutes but amazing that, given their supremacy they could not build on that and on 33 minutes Stockport scored through Jamie Anthony.

However, tries from James Twomey, Stephen Depledge, and Luke Cole settled Otley down.

After the break they paid the penalty for poor decision making whilst still playing their attractive football. No 6 Johnathan Matthews kept them ahead with a try on 60 minutes and they retained the upper hand, Stockport’s final try coming in added time.

Winless Huddersfield slipped to the foot of the table after a 33-7 home defeat against leaders Stourbridge.

Having lost the opening game of the season at home to Caldy and at Otley last time out, Huddersfield faced a daunting task against a side who had won both their opening games.

And so it proved as Stourbridge made the home side work from the start and consistently tested their defensive line. Huddersfield survived the initial test but they came under heavier pressure and the visitors began to find gaps. Two tries and two penalties left Dan Hyde’s men trailing 16-0.

A converted try after the break looked to have set Stourbridge free, only for the hosts to hit back when turnover ball allowed a quick break and No 8 Nick Sharpe broke through to score.

Ultimately the pressure told and the visitors went on to add two further tries.

Hull lost out to rivals Luctonians 23-26 in a dramatic match, with the visitors snatching victory in the last minute.

Hull led with just a minute remaining, but conceded a converted try to leave them with just a losing bonus point.

Greg Lound kicked Hull into an early lead with a penalty after seven minutes, and although Luctonians hit back with Drew Cheshire scoring a try and David Smith converting, Hull led 20-7 at half-time with Dan White and Alex Piercy touching down; Lound kicked two conversions and Jim Wigglesworth a penalty.

Luctonians closed the gap at the start of the second half with a converted try from Chris Harris, before Smith scored a try of his own. A Lound penalty extended Hull’s lead to 23-19, but Cheshire’s second and Smith’s conversion secured the win.

Sheffield Tigers beat hosts Westoe 23-18 for their first win.Half-backs Ryan Holmes and Tom Outram touched down, while Outram kicked two conversions and three penalties.
