Meetings fall victim to weather

Southwell's jumps fixture tomorrow has become the latest casualty of the cold snap.

With overnight temperatures having plummeted to minus 11C, the meeting was abandoned following an inspection yesterday morning.

"There was absolutely no hope, so we've called it a day already," said clerk of the course Roderick Duncan.

All is not lost at the Lincolnshire venue, however, as a six-race Flat card on the all-weather will be formulated on the same afternoon.

Declarations to run must be made by 10am today, with the first race due off at 1pm.

Duncan added: "The all-weather track is being well worked, and we're not anticipating any problems."

Today's Folkestone meeting is subject to a second inspection early this morning.

Conditions have improved significantly in Kent, with clerk of the course Andy Waitt in bullish mood following an afternoon assessment yesterday.

Waitt will still check again at 7.30am today, but is hopeful the fixture can defeat the elements.

He said: "There is around one centimetre of snow on the ground but the track isn't frozen. Overnight temperatures are not due to get below freezing – between OC and 1C. That's good news and, as it stands, I'd say I'm 60-40 in favour of the meeting going ahead."

Hereford have called time on tomorrow's meeting with course officials seeing little need to even call an official inspection as temperatures dropped to minus 11C.
