Missed kicks costly as Ionians suffer again

Hull Ionians went down 41-25 to Richmond as they continue to struggle to come to terms with National One rugby.

The East Yorkshire side matched their rivals with five tries, but missed every kick at goal, whereas the Surrey side kicked all five conversions and added two penalties to make sure of the win.

Influential fly-half Rob Kirby kicked through for Richmond centre Nick Moore to run on and score and Tom Platt added the conversion after three minutes.

Nine minutes later, winger James Greenwood finished off a smart move for Platt to convert.

The hosts hit back through centre Richard Fletcher scoring before Joe Sanders crashed over five to make it 14-10 at half time.

Richmond started the second half well, however, and added 17 points in seven minutes.

First Platt kicked a penalty on 43 minutes, and then added the extras following a good spell of play which ended with No 8 Harrison Edwards going over.

Platt then touched down himself on 52 minutes and kicked the conversion, before also adding a 55th minute penalty to leave Ionians struggling at 34-10.

But winger Jon Steel latched onto a forward drive and burrowed his way over for a try after 63 minutes to narrow the gap.

However, Richmond replied quickly with second row Chris Davies completing a close-range forward effort, Platt again adding the conversion to make it 41-15.

Ionians finished the match strongly and added further scores from Fletcher and centre Steve Slingsby to earn their first bonus point of the season.
