Mixed weekend for Ennis-Hill as Houghton and Bosworth impress

Jessica Ennis-Hill (City of Sheffield) had mixed fortunes in the UK Championships at Birmingham at the weekend.

In the 100 metres hurdles she continued her progress towards full fitness with a smooth performance in a time of 13.10, a season’s best. That gave her third place behind Tiffany Porter (12.83) and sister Cindi Ofily (12.96) who has recently qualified for Great Britain. Ennis-Hill would certainly have been close to the 13-second mark but for a significant headwind.

However, the Olympic heptathlon champion will have been disappointed with her javelin where 39.84 did not qualify to make the “cut” for three extra throws.

Jack Houghton (City of Sheffield) ran a fine race for runner-up spot in the 400m hurdles behind Neil Flannery. Houghton clocked 50.60 to hold off former world champion Dai Greene. Houghton needs to run the qualifying time of 49.50 to secure selection for the World Championships.

Sheffield based Louise Bloor (Trafford) was third in the 200 metres (23.80) and just missed a medal in the 100 finishing fourth in 11.58 which should give her a place in the relay squad for the World Championships.

There was disappointment for Luke Cutts (City of Sheffield) in the pole vault. Steve Lewis won with a modest height of 5.35 with Cutts down in fourth place with 5.20. Middlebrough’s Johanna Atkinson led all the way to win the women’s 5K walk in a time of 22:03.55 whilst Tom Bosworth, a Tonbridge athlete based at Leeds Carnegie broke the UK record in the men’s event with an outstanding 19:00.73.
