Mohammed and Emanuel setting out on indoor quest for European glory in Prague

Two City of Sheffield runners bid for continental titles at the European Indoor Championships in Prague this weekend.

Mukhtar Mohammed, a bronze medallist in the 800m at the Europeans two years ago in Gothenburg, is one of three Britons in the first round this lunchtime. The final is on Sunday.

Lee Emanuel, the 3,000m British champion, contests the first round of his event this evening, with this final also scheduled for Sunday.

The British team is headed by pentathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who has made a strong start to 2015.

The 22-year-old, billed as Jessica Ennis-Hill’s natural heir, is chasing her first major title and says last year’s injuries have fuelled her motivation.

The Liverpool athlete missed out on an invitation for the pentathlon at the World Indoors last March due to illness in the run-up to the competition, instead winning silver in the long jump, while a foot problem ruled her out of the Commonwealth Games and European Championships last summer.

She still ended the year ranked No 1 in the world in the heptathlon.

Jenny Meadows looks to regain her title in the 800m at the age of 33, while Chijindu Ujah and Dina Asher-Smith carry British hopes in the men’s and women’s 60m sprints, respectively.
