Morley are beaten but YMCA earn first draw

Sandal’s 36-24 victory at home to Rossendale was built on forward dominance.

The home side racked-up a 29-0 first-half lead as their scrum simply ravaged the opposition’s. James Ellar, with a brace, Gareth Newman and Rob Norbury scored plus a penalty try.

Rossendale made a second-half comeback until Luke Norbury’s try ended their hopes.

Morley lost for the first time this season after conceding five tries in a 32-23 defeat at Firwood Waterloo. Winger Tom Clough scored an early try only for the hosts to score three unanswered tries on the wings to lead 20-13. Ross Bayston and Jamie Frost crossed for the Maroons in the second half but the tries were matched by Waterloo.

Huddersfield YMCA managed to avoid defeat for the first time this season after coming from behind for a 16-16 draw at Wirral. Gavin Stead landed three penalties and a conversion in a closely contested encounter where the hosts had led in the first half before YMCA came back with a successful kick by Stead in the final quarter.

Sheffield Tigers notched up a big 43-19 win at Billingham.

Centre Liam Wallace ran in two tries, while others came from full-back Alex Graham, second row Josh Redfearn, hooker Ed Simmonds, winger Henry Packard and Chris Keetley. Tom Outram kicked four conversions.

Beverley achieved their first victory, 21-15 over Burnage.

Alex Smith and David Worrall scored the tries while Jamie Gill kicked 11 points.

Cleckheaton equipped themselves well and it wasn’t until the last quarter that leaders Sale pulled away to win 37-16. Cleckheaton countered Sale’s fast start with three Ross Hayden penalties and a try from Danny Vento. They led 16-10 at the break after which Sale took charge.
