Mum’s the word for Cup hat-trick star

THE annual Bedale races will keep the Yorkshire Area Point-to-Point season going in style this weekend with the most valuable race held in the county.

The Bedale Point-to-Point meeting will begin at 1.30pm on Sunday at Hornby Castle where the fixture has been held since 1947 by kind permission of the Clutterbuck family.

The highlight of an eagerly-awaited card is the George F White £1000 Men’s Open Race, the most valuable race held in the White Rose.

The meeting also concludes with the Hunters’ Challenge, which is a chance for non-racing horses and riders to have a ride round the point-to-point course.

Admission is £10 per person with under-16s free and free car parking. Refreshments, trade stands, bookmakers and are available with more information on the event accessible at www.bedalepointotpoint.co.uk.

The Bank Holiday weekend saw a Yorkshire Area double-header with William Easterby teaming up with his mother Sarah’s Monsieur Jourdain at Sunday’s Middleton Point-to-Point at Sheriff Hutton to win the Grimthorpe Gold Cup for the third successive year – a feat which has never been achieved before.

Always handy, Monsieur Jourdain was up with the pace, which was largely set by Killary Bay and Max Johnson, and the pair simply stayed on and on to beat Oaklands Robbie and Alice Petch by 10 lengths. Sportingfriendship was a further eight lengths back in third under Harry Bannister.

“It was a great training performance by mum,” reported the winning jockey.

“He is one of the most honest horses who always tries, even when he doesn’t like it. Mum rides him out every day and she deserves the credit.”

The crowds then flocked to the Staintondale Hunt at their former home of Charm Park on Bank Holiday Monday.
