Murphy defends his Gold Cup entrants

North Yorkshire trainer Paul Murphy has defended his decision to use today's Gold Cup as a Grand National trial for two of his runners.

Apart from champion trainer Paul Nicholls who has four entries, two of which are Aintree contenders, Murphy is the only handler with more than one entry.

He runs Cerium, fifth in last year's National, and his more recent acquisition Mr Pointment – a horse with winning form over Aintree's fearsome fences.

Both are rank outsiders.

But Murphy, whose father Ferdy trains at West Witton, has rejuvenated both chasers who were previously trained by Nicholls.

"Years ago, it used to be a Grand National trial and that's what we're using it for," said Murphy, who trains at Coverdale.

"I'm not alone. Mon Mome, last year's National winner is in the race, as is My Will who was third at Aintree last year. It means the first, third and fifth from last year's National are all at Cheltenham.

"Davy Russell rides Cerium – he lodged with me when he was Dad's stable jockey – and I've been friends with Ken Whelan, who rides Mr Pointment, for years.

"A bit of prize money would be fantastic so we go to the National with confidence. We're not going to beat Kauto Star, but, equally, we're not going to be running around at the back."
