Narrow win for Bees sees them through to next round

Bradford and Bingley secured a nail-biting 25-27 victory over hosts Pocklington to boost their Yorkshire Cup campaign with a preliminary round win.

Centre Richard Tapper, No 8 Simon Hill and winger Sam Hesketh all touched down, while they were also awarded a penalty try. Tom Bills kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Cleckheaton also won away from home in the Cup, beating hosts Morley 26-14.

No 8 Richard Piper touched down early on, full-back Ross Hayden converting.

Hayden then converted his own try, before also improving winger James Marshall’s effort to make it 21-0.

Morley hit back with a try either side of half-time, firstly from hooker Kyle Scott and then from centre Bradley Marshall, and with full-back Charlie Spon-Smith and stand-off Mark Chester converting, they closed to 21-14. But flanker Olly Ackroyd added a fourth try for Cleckheaton.

Driffield notched up an emphatic 64-17 win over Malton and Norton. Stand-off Jordan McGregor scored a hat-trick of tries and also kicked seven conversions, while centre Alex Cullen scored two.

Scarborough secured an emphatic 44-7 away win in the first round of the Yorkshire Shield, Chris Purdy scoring two tries as they beat hosts Old Rishworthians.

Tom Ratcliffe kicked four conversions and three penalties.

Jason Avieson touched down twice as Yarnbury won 40-24 at Baildon, while Selby were convincing 64-0 winners at Moortown with flanker Jacob Robinson scoring a hat-trick and New Zealander Terina Brown and Stephen Clark grabbing two tries apiece.

Bradford Salem ran out 32-22 in their clash with Wath on Dearne, while North Ribblesdale scored seven tries on their way to a 43-5 victory over Pontefract, No 8 Matt Spears touching down twice.

Elsewhere, Roundhegians beat Ripon 16-12, West Leeds won 37-30 over Acklam and Heath scraped a close 11-10 win over Doncaster Phoenix.

Shield champions in 2011-12, Bridlington scraped a 17-18 win over hosts Barnsley with a 72nd-minute try by Tom Benninger proving decisive.

Halifax Vandals beat Wibsey 58-5 in the Yorkshire Silver Trophy with winger Alan Francis scoring two tries, while others came from captain Paul Jowitt, second row Jamie Richardson, inside centre Luke Sutcliffe and Daniel Hartley.

Old Otliensians came away from Skipton with a 20-8 victory under their belts. Winger Josh Howarth and centre Luke Cowdell scored tries, while full-back Kristian Keinhorst kicked both conversions and two penalties.
