National One: Jamie Guy hits target but Wharfedale are sunk by late try

The Greens elected to play with the wind in the first half and were rewarded with a penalty in the 11th minute after a dominant scrum, Jamie Guy kicking them ahead.

He struck again after a succession of drives and line-outs and added another in the 29th minute.

Plymouth struck back in the 38 minute when Michael Stupple was driven over for a try converted by Billy Searle.

The second half belonged to the Wharfedale pack, though they were unable to break the line and score.

Just when it looked like a hard-fought victory for Wharfedale an up and under was misjudged, resulting in a scrum and a penalty to Plymouth. From a quick tap, Matthew Shepherd was driven over the line for an unconverted winning try to leave Wharfedale bottom with just two wins from 13 games.

After narrowly missing out on victory against Blackheath in the previous match, Hull Ionians were pipped again, this time by hosts Ampthill who ran out 22-21 victors at Dillingham Park.

The home side got off the mark with a penalty from left winger Elliot Clements-Hill, but Ionians took the lead with a penalty try being awarded after 16 minutes, scrum-half Isaac Green adding the conversion.

Ampthill edged in front on the half-hour mark with flanker Joe Bercis touching down, and he repeated the feat on 40 minutes, this time with Clements-Hill adding the conversion to make it 15-7.

Early in the second half, the home side went further in front with hooker Aleki Lutui scrambling over and Clements-Hill adding the conversion, and things did not look good for the Yorkshire side.

But they battled back strongly, with right winger Aquile Smith scoring on 55 minutes, Green converting, and they teamed up again in similar fashion on 62 minutes to narrow the gap to 22-21.

However, that proved to be the last score and Ionians had to settle for a losing bonus point, which leaves them with 29 points from 13 games and in 11th place out of 16 clubs.
