National Three: Montgomery quick to make impact as Tigers leave Hull in their wake

Leaders Sheffield Tigers pulled further clear of Hull when they ran in eight tries on their way to a 53-24 victory at Birkenhead Park.

Tigers’ new winger James Montgomery, who has joined from Wheatley Hills, scored two tries on his senior debut.

Winger Jamie Broadley and full-back Peter Swatkins scored early tries for Tigers, both converted by Mark Ireland, who also landed a penalty goal, and who converted Montgomery’s first try.

Centre Tom Outram touched down for the bonus-winning fourth try, and, after Swatkins bagged his second, there were others from winger Henri Packard and Lee Monks.

Hull came from behind for a 23-19 win at Sheffield but were restricted to two second-half tries.

Sheffield led 13-6 at half-time after a try from centre Lee Sanders, converted by Jonny France, and two penalties by France, to two penalties by Josh Bragman.

Tom Rice, Hull’s captain and hooker, crashed over for their first try shortly after the restart, and Fijiian centre Tomasi Tanumi sidestepped three defenders to touch down ten minutes later. Bragman converted both and added a third penalty, to Sheffield’s two second-half penalties by France.

Cleckheaton got their first win of the campaign 44-20 at home to bottom club Burnage.

A harsh decision on the stroke of half time cost Ilkley dear, going down 34-29 to Billingham.

Ilkley came quickly out of the blocks and led 13-12 just before half-time with a smart Nick Carolan try and a conversion and two penalties from Joe Rowntree.

But then J H Johnson prevented Billingham grounding but the referee awarded a penalty try and showed him the yellow card for what he considered a high tackle.

Johnson’s absence cost Ilkley 17 points and though they fought their way back with a try by Lawson and two more successful kicks from Rowntree, a mistake allowed Billingham to move out of reach.

Huddersfield YMCA had eight first-choice players absent through injury or unavailability and paid a heavy price for a huge first-half defensive effort with Rossendale running riot after the break to win 64-3.

YM put on a gutsy display to hold Rossendale to 3-3 at the break, Simon Wilson landing a penalty. But the home side picked up the pace and they ran in nine tries, all but one converted.
