National Three: Outram blow after Packard shines as Tigers eye place in the play-offs

Sheffield Tigers, who won by only one try on their rivals’ ground, demonstrated the best defence in the league to hand Huddersfield YMCA a 39-0 beating on a windswept Dore Moor.

Tigers, eyeing a play-off place after Sandal’s defeat at Lymm, took an early lead with a penalty by Tom Outram and then ran in six tries on their way to victory.

Winger Henri Packard scored four of the tries, including two in the first half which, along with another from scrum-half Ryan Holmes, gave Tigers a 24-0 interval lead.

Outram converted all three but went off injured at half-time and none of the second-half tries by Packard (two) and back-row Lee Monks were converted.

Beverley lost out 51-25 at home after poor defending let Rossendale in for eight tries.

Rossendale were 24-13 up at half-time through tries by Stephen Nutt and Anthony Bingham (3), two converted, to tries by James Graham and Alex McPeake and a conversion and penalty from Ryan Murray.

In the second half, Nutt added a penalty and two conversions for Rossendale with Danny Harrison, Simon Walker, Jamie Albinson and Bingham scoring further tries.

Tries by Junior Tupai and Craig Hancock secured a bonus point for Beverley.

Morley secured their second win of 2015 with Luke Stevenson’s stoppage-time penalty finishing off fellow strugglers Burnage 20-17.

The Maroons needed a win to maintain any hope of escaping the drop zone and their three penalties in the first half to Burnage’s unconverted try proved enough for the lead.

The hosts hit back with two quick tries to lead 17-9 but Morley winger Tom Clough’s touchdown reduced the arrears and the scores were level on 74 minutes when stand-off Mark Chester dropped a goal.

A penalty arrived six minutes into stoppage time and centre Luke Stevenson landed his fourth kick for victory.

Sandal suffered defeat for the first time since the campaign’s opening game after going down 15-12 at Lymm.

Sandal trailed 10-3 at half-time despite taking a 3-0 lead in the early stages. Fly-half Mark Pease kicked three successive penalties to establish a 12-10 lead but, with 15 minutes left, a third try for the hosts put them in control again.

Sandal had a chance to level matters with a penalty at the end but it went wide.

Cleckheaton went down 17-7 at Billingham, always struggling to recover from a 12-point deficit at half-time.

Richard Piper’s try, converted by Ross Hayden, saw them reduce the deficit but Matty Kirkby’s effort at the other end put the game out of reach.
