National title for Olympic champion

With Olympic, World and European titles already in his trophy cabinet, Barnsley's Ed Clancy yesterday added the National Team Time Trial Championship to his list of accolades when he won the event on Yorkshire roads.

Alongside Wolverhampton's Andy Tennant and Burnley's Steven Burke, 25-year-old Clancy helped the trio of Motorpoint-Marshalls Pasta riders clock 1hr 6min 13sec for the 35-mile course based around the A19 at Stokesley in North Yorkshire.

Their time was 1.19 faster than their nearest rivals, and gave them an impressive average speed of 29.9mph. Second spot went to the Sigma Sport-Specialized team of Wouter Sybrandy, Phill Sykes and Jerone Walters, while there was also a Yorkshire presence elsewhere on the podium.

Third spot went to the I Ride Racing Team trio of Adam Duggleby from Gilberdyke, Julian Ramsbottom from Scunthorpe and Matt Bottrill from Leicester, whose time of 1.07:42 was just 10 seconds behind Sigma Sport.

Elsewhere in the region, Hull time-trial ace Joel Wainman was victorious in the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 50-mile event, the Team Swift rider covering the course near Thirsk in 1.48:05 to win by almost four minutes from Huddersfield Star Wheelers' Mark Thaxter.

Veteran Neil Skellern of Congleton CC took third, holding off Yorkshire Road Club's Ian Fairweather by two and a half minutes.

And in the South Elmsall SCC 10-mile event at Hatfield Woodhouse on Saturday, Cherry Valley RT rider Ian Dalton took the win from York's Ian Holmes, while Wayne Thorpe of Team Swift was third.

All the weekend's time trials benefited from warm conditions, but strong winds made good times hard to come by.
