Leicester shaded the first half and led 11-8 at half-time, Sandal having scored a pushover try from flanker James Briscoe and a penalty from Mark Pease.

After the break, two penalties put the hosts marginally ahead and they began to take charge before a moment of good fortune brought about a try.

A long kick to the corner bounced back over the head of a defender and into the arms of Sandal’s Ralph Cartwright, who offloaded to fly-half Pease, who touched down and then converted to make it 21-11.

Leicester hit back through their forwards with a try that narrowed the gap to three points but Pease’s penalty seven minutes from time ensured victory for Sandal.

An indisciplined Huddersfield performance, which included two yellow cards and one red, saw them slip to a 29-13 defeat at Luctonians.

The visitors started out with a penalty but conceded three first-half tries and could only add a further kick from fly-half Chris Bell to trail 19-6 at the interval.

The second half started badly with a sin-binning for both Huddersfield flankers and that allowed the hosts to extend their advantage to 29-6. Huddersfield suffered a red card and even a late try was not enough to make up for a disappointing display.

Otley conceded a last-minute try as they slid to a 28-25 defeat at home to Sedgley Park Tigers.

The first half was a closely fought contest with the Tigers just edging things with two tries to Otley’s one from winger Henry Roberts.

After the break, Otley started to get the better possession, captain Stephen Depledge kicking two penalties, Roberts adding a second try and replacement Charles Capps coming on to score a third which was converted.

Sedgley’s third try made it 25-21 going into the latter stages but Otley’s defence failed to hold out and the visitors crossed to claim the win and another bonus point with seconds remaining.

Depleted Harrogate lost 24-12 at Stourbridge after their worst display of the season.

Aarin Yorke’s early try was converted by Lewis Minikin before Stourbridge ran in four tries in 14 minutes to put the match out of reach.

Harrogate tightened up after the interval and actually won the second half but it was too little too late.

From an attacking line-out, replacement scrum-half Danny Matthews created a gap from which replacement hooker, Tom Larder crashed over. Sound defence kept out Stourbridge and Minikin went close but put a foot in touch when clear.
