New events for top show

EQUINE classes at the Great Yorkshire Show this summer are likely to attract a high quality of entries.

New classes and record prize money of 46,434 are an added attraction and show organisers are expecting around 2,000 entries in the equine section.

The new Top of the North Supreme Championship, sponsored by TopSpec, has a prize of 1,500 for the supreme ridden horse of the show and the inaugural winner will be announced on the Thursday afternoon of the show in the main ring. The reserve will win 250.

Also new this year is the Retrained Racehorse class which is being sponsored by Mark Johnston Racing, based at Middleham.

The top two horses placed will go through to the 2011 Hickstead Derby meeting.

Another addition is the First Ridden Mountain & Moorland for mares and geldings aged four or over, with a rider aged 12 by the start of the year.

The show holds a number of qualifiers for the Horse of

the Year Show, including the premier in-hand class,

the Cuddy Supreme Championship, which attracts entries from all over the country and is judged on the final afternoon.

The Great Yorkshire Show takes place from July 13 to 15 and the deadline for entries in the equine classes is May 4.
