He was on the second hole and hot-footed it across the fairway to the Old Course Hotel alongside the 17th.

From there he Tweeted: "Blown off the course by the blustery Scottish winds. Having a nice pot of tea in the conservatory of the Old Course Hotel. Lovely jubbly."

No doubt the poor souls being buffeted by the gales out on the loop at the far end of the St Andrews links were ecstatic for him.

What other reason could there be for not drawing Holmes (JB), Watson (Tom), and Moriarty (Colm) together for the opening two rounds?

n Criticism has often been aimed at the R&A for being stuffy and old fashioned but they have moved with the times by making available a rules application for iPhones and iPads.

"The Rules App is a fantastic reference tool that allows you to find any Rules information you might require, on the move," said David Rickman, the R&A's director of rules and equipment standards.

The only question is, who will use it, considering mobile phones are barred from most courses and clubhouses.
