Nottingham 14 Doncaster Knights 27: Knights still in the hunt for last four after seeing off rivals

DONCASTER blew away Nottingham to take the Championship play-off battle down to the final weekend in a fortnight when a bonus-point win will secure a last-four spot for Lynn Howells's side – unless yesterday's opponents gain a similar result themselves at Exeter.

The Knights opened the scoring after eight minutes when winger Andy Wright raced 70 metres to score a try that James Brooks converted.

Fly-half Greg Tonks then ghosted through a gap for Nottingham's opening try that full-back David Jackson converted. After 36 minutes, Knights prop Ngalu Tau was sin-binned for a technical offence. But as the game went into stoppage time, Doncaster forced an error and gained a line-out five metres from the Nottingham line, enabling centre Bevon Armitage to crash through and dive over.

Ta'u rejoined the fray early in the second half but, shortly afterwards, the Knights lost fly- half Brooks to a yellow card.

But Doncaster increased their lead with two penalties by winger Dougie Flockhart, standing in for Brooks as kicker.

Nottingham's replacement prop Peter Cook then went to the sin bin for a technical offence.

With 10 minutes left, Nottingham failed to gather a kick by Flockhart just on their 10- metre line and the bouncing ball was picked up by Boden and moved quickly to lock Glen Townson.

He fed back row Neil Cochrane who passed to Armitage and his scoring pass to Wright enabled the latter to cut back inside to score between the posts. Brooks's conversion put the Knights 18 points ahead with nine minutes left.

With six minutes left, a Knights clearing kick was gathered by Nottingham full-back Savage and, three passes and one poor attempted tackle later, centre Tim Streather was over between the posts for a try that Savage himself converted.
