Ocean War is hoping to bring Carlton House down in Derby

IT IS not just the Queen who is chasing her first Epsom Derby victory on Saturday; the same applies to Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation.

And connections are confident that Ocean War, the intended mount of Frankie Dettori, can defeat Her Majesty’s Carlton House, who heads the 17-strong field.

Epsom’s blue riband race has been an unlucky hunting ground for the Sheikh and his Royal blue colours, even though his wife, Princess Haya of Jordan, owned the 2008 victor New Approach. He also gifted Carlton House to the Queen when the horse was an unproven yearling.

However, Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said Ocean War goes to Epsom as a legitimate contender.

“Ocean War has done very well – he’s unbeaten this season,” he said. “What we like about him is his very tenacious attitude.

“We’re pretty certain a mile-and-a-half will suit him very well. On the book we know he’s got plenty to find and he’s got to improve a great deal on what he’s done so far.”

However, Crisford said the Sheikh would be thrilled if Carlton House prevailed.

“He draws so much pleasure from seeing other people enjoy tremendous success,” he said.

“He’s a real giver and it would mean a lot having bred the colt, and the mare was one of the first Godolphin had.”

Meanwhile, Crisford says Godolphin’s 1000 Guineas winner Blue Bunting is in top form ahead of the Investec Oaks on Friday.

The filly attempts to emulate Kazzia, who completed the Guineas-Oaks double for Sheikh Mohammed in 2002.

n Richard Fahey is looking at further sprint prizes for Majestic Myles following his comeback success at Newmarket on Saturday.

The gelding won three times during 2010 and was not beaten far by his esteemed stablemate Wootton Bassett in a valuable sales race at York in August, an excellent effort considering he suffered a serious injury during the race.

Fahey is now eyeing the Bond Tyres Trophy, part of York’s June 11 charity day, for Majestic Myles.

The Malton trainer also confirmed Wootton Bassett remains on course for a clash with Frankel at the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot next month. “He’s fine and everything is on course for him to go to Ascot,” added Fahey.

n Sue Smith’s chasing veteran Mister McGoldrick heads the former Cheltenham Festival winners who will be paraded at Cartmel tomorrow.
