Oliver hits the target at Lord’s with selection for the Olympics

ROTHERHAm archer Amy Oliver has realised her dream by being selected in the six-strong Team GB for London 2012.

“I am so thrilled, and proud, to qualify for the Olympic Games, and securing my place makes all those long hours of practice, hard work and sacrifice worthwhile,” said the delighted 24-year-old.

While Oliver will be making her Games debut, Alison Williamson will be competing in her sixth Games.

The team was unveiled at Lord’s and Oliver continued: “You have good days and bad ones during the course of the year, but when you’re chasing the dream of going to the Olympics – even more so, your home Olympics – you never let anything distract you from making sure you arrive at your destination.

“I am so pleased to be part of a team with Alison Williamson and Naomi Folkard, who have been so supportive since I first broke through to the international squad in 2007.”

Williamson narrowly missed out on an automatic spot at the final selection shoot at Lilleshall last month but has been handed the final discretionary place, with Alan Wills earning the discretionary place in the men’s team.

Williamson’s selection, confirmed by performance director Sara Symington and head coach Lloyd Brown, makes her only the third Briton after javelin thrower Tessa Sanderson and fencer Bill Hoskyns to win a place at six Olympics.

The host nation will have the maximum of three archers in both the men’s and women’s competitions and compete in both team events.

Oliver and Folkard, appearing at the Games for a third time, took the top two places in the selection process.

In the men’s event, Larry Godfrey will make a third Games appearance and Simon Terry a fourth after they topped the scoring at Lilleshall.

Wills, who joined the pair in Beijing four years ago, was widely tipped to be picked again and all but assured his place at the weekend when he, Godfrey and Terry took team gold in the World Cup event in Turkey.
