Olympics: Laura Trott has her eye on taking a bow in medal bid

Two-time gold medallist Trott is hoping to become the first British woman to win a third Olympic gold, and will compete in both the omnium and the team pursuit in Rio.

At 24, she has the potential to go even further, but when it comes to the possibility of matching Hoy’s haul of six golds, it is fiance Kenny whom she sees as more likely as he looks to add to his three golds this summer.

“The fact he can be level with Sir Chris’s record is just insane,” she said.

“I obviously hope he gets it. Also I want him to become ‘Sir’ so I become Lady Laura.”

But asked about her own chances, Trott said: “I joked about breaking Sir Chris Hoy’s record if I carried on and I guess I will let you know after Rio about how I feel, but... it doesn’t seem like me. It doesn’t feel like me. If it happens, it happens.

“I see Sir Chris as like the god of cycling – and for me I am nowhere near that. For me to break the record that he set seems so far out of my comfort zone and so far out of what I could achieve it seems not something I could think about.”

British Olympic Association (BOA) chief executive Bill Sweeney has reported no illness among the teams using the water facilities at Rio 2016.

There have been concerns about the amount of pollution in water at venues like the Marina da Gloria in Guanabara Bay ahead of the Games.

Sweeney said: “We haven’t had any illnesses and, touch wood, we won’t have any while we are out here for the Games.

“Our sailors have been out here testing for over 200 days now over the past couple of years. They have been out here extensively, as have the rowers. We have had our open water swimmers out here as well, and we haven’t had any incidences of illness.

“I don’t believe the situation there has got any worse. We are in regular contact with them and we talk to them about updates on their experiences there.

“There is a very strict hygiene protocol here in terms of dousing down and cleaning down after every contact with water – we make sure that goes on. There is strict adherence to bottled water for brushing your teeth and all sorts of things.”
