Olympics overnight: Swimmer Adam Peaty smashes world record | What's in store today

Day one action included:

* Adam Peaty broke his own world record on the way to qualifying for the final of the 100m breaststroke. The 21-year-old set a new mark of 57.55 seconds in the heats before backing it up with the second fastest time in history, 57.62secs, in his semi-final to cement his status as gold medal favourite.

* Also in the pool, Hannah Miley got closest to a British medal on day one, edged out of bronze by just 0.15s in the 400m individual medley. Katinka Hosszu smashed the world record to take gold in 4:26.36. Sheffield’s Max Litchfield, 21, was fourth in the 400m individual medley and James Guy, the world champion over 200m freestyle, faded to sixth in the 400m event.

* Britain’s hopes of road race glory evaporated as Geraint Thomas tumbled to the road on the concluding descent with 10 kilometres to go of the 237.5km race. Greg van Avermaet of Belgium won gold, with Chris Froome having to settle for 12th place.

* Heather Watson and Beverley’s Kyle Edmund ensured Britain’s Olympic tennis campaign got off to a positive start. Edmund dispatched Australia’s Jordan Thompson 6-4 6-2 and Watson battled past China’s Peng Shuai 6-4 6-7 (5/7) 6-3.

* Reigning champion Katherine Grainger, GB’s most successful female Olympic rower, and Vicky Thornley were pipped to victory in the women’s double sculls heats, finishing 0.5 seconds behind the Lithuanian boat. Alan Campbell won his men’s single sculls heat.

* Max Whitlock and Louis Smith limbered up for a potential gold medal showdown on the men’s pommel by leading Great Britain into the final of the men’s team event at the Rio Olympic Park. Great Britain are fancied to at least match their team bronze in London 2012 while one of Whitlock or Smith is set to get the chance to claim the nation’s first Olympic gymnastics gold when they go head to head on their favoured apparatus in the individual competition.

The five-strong British team also includes Kristian Thomas, Leeds’ Nile Wilson and Brinn Bevan.

* Russia, competing in Rio after the International Olympic Committee opted not to impose a blanket ban for state-sponsored doping, won their first gold medal of Rio 2016 after judoka Beslan Mudranov triumphed in the men’s -60kg final.

* Peaty is the overwhelming favourite to land the first Olympic gold for a British male swimmer since Adrian Moorhouse in 1988. He goes in the 100m breaststroke final at around 2.45am.

* Otley’sLizzie Armitstead claimed Britain’s first medal at London 2012 by winning silver and she will hope to put a turbulent week behind her by going one better in Rio in the women’s road race, which gets under way at 4:15pm BST.

* Andy Murray gets the defence of his Olympic men’s singles title under way with a first-round encounter against Serbia’s Viktor Troicki on Sunday. The Scot is third on the centre court before also taking on Brazilians Andre Sa and Thomaz Bellucci alongside brother Jamie in the doubles. Tenth seed Konta begins her medal bid against Liechtenstein’s Stephanie Vogt.

* Reigning Olympic, world and European champions Helen Glover and Heather Stanning are in the rowing heats of the women’s coxless pair at roughly 2:10pm.

* London judoka Colin Oates competes in the -66kg category from approximately 2pm, while fencer Richard Kruse is also in action around the same time.
