Options open up for Armitstead

OTLEY'S Lizzie Armitstead is uncertain whether she will go for individual track gold at the London Olympics after a strong showing in the World Championships in Copenhagen.

The 21-year-old took silver in the women's omnium – a multi-event discipline which will be in the 2012 programme – and in the women's team pursuit alongside Joanna Rowsell and Wendy Houvenaghel.

However, Armitstead anticipates she will be unable to compete in both events in the capital in two years' time.

"As it stands at the moment a team pursuiter won't be able to be an omnium rider as well, so I'll have to make the call nearer the time," she said.

Other riders are expected to come into contention for the event in 2012, including Beijing individual pursuit champion Rebecca Romero and Nicole Cooke, the Olympic road race gold medallist.

British Cycling performance director Dave Brailsford is in bullish mood two years out from the London Games after his team's performance

Having won seven out of 10 titles at the 2008 Olympics Britain were always going to struggle to continually repeat that success.

Old adversaries Australia topped the medal standings in Copenhagen last week, but Brailsford believes Britain have plenty in reserve.

"We are where we are at this moment in time and we've got a lot of work to do," he said.

"But overall I think we're in great shape."
