Orr strikes to ensure maximum for Sandal

Sandal made sure of maximum points with four tries in a 24-8 home win over Wirral.

After Sandal fell 3-0 behind, full-back James Ellar scored a try and the advantage was extended by a penalty-try, fly-half Mark Pease converting both.

Wirral hit back to make it 14-8 at the break but in a wet second half, Ellar again went in to take it to 19-8.

The fourth try was important and after a series of forward drives some quick hands put winger Alex Orr in at the corner.

Morley ran in two second-half tries against title-chasing Sheffield Tigers but lost 22-14.

The Maroons were hit by a three-try, first-half blitz but they produced a better display after the interval.

Prop Ben Bell and winger Karl Bradshaw scored tries, converted by stand-off Mark Chester, but Sheffield needed five points to stay in touch with the top two and they duly obliged with an interception.

Huddersfield YMCA secured their first win in three with a 20-8 success at home to Billingham.

A first half try, conversion and two penalties by full-back Gavin Stead saw YMCA lead 13-3 before a second-half score from hooker Sam Hodge extended the advantage, so Billingham’s late try counted for nothing.

A first half hat-trick from Ross Hayden sealed Beverley’s fate and helped Cleckheaton claim a bonus point in the opening half before going on to a 48-5 win.

James Wilson also dived in at the corner and Hayden added three conversions to put Cleckheaton 26-0 in front.

Beverley winger Jake Marin crossed before Cleckheaton added further tries through Mike Piper and captain Richard Piper (2). Mike Piper added a drop goal and Hayden converted two of the tries.
