Doncaster Classic the St Leger pencilled in for Irish Derby winner Santiago

IRISH Derby hero Santiago is on course for Doncaster’s St Leger in September, trainer Aidan O’Brien has confirmed.

The horse was providing the Ballydoyle trainer with an unprecedented 14th win in Ireland’s premier race less than 10 days after triumphing at Royal Ascot in the Queen’s Vase.

Confidently ridden by Seamie Heffernan, the horse headed a clean sweep for the peerless O’Brien who was responsible for the first four home in this mile and a half Classic at the Curragh.

Yet, with the trainer appearing to have a less strong hand in this weekend’s Epsom Derby, Santiago could become a flagbearer for Ballydoyle and the Coolmore breeding empire.

“Ascot was his first run of the year, and he had a tough enough race over a mile and six,” said a visibly elated O’Brien.

“It was a big call and a big worry to run (here) – but obviously there is only one Irish Derby. There is a chance he could have a break now, and be trained for the St Leger.”

O’Brien will be more than happy to go back up in trip for future assignments, but O’Brien last night raised the tantalising possibility of Santiago being entered in the Epsom race today. “It’s very possible,” he said.
