Lizzy Banks wins stage of Gira Rosa to ride into GC contention

Lizzy Banks continued her encouraging form by claiming one of the biggest wins of her career.

The 29-year-old Sheffield-based cyclist won a stage of the Giro Rosa – the Giro d’Italia for women – from Assisi to Tivoli yesterday.

Banks broke clear and won by seven seconds to climb up to 11th in the general classification.

She is also now seventh on the points classification having finished fourth with her team Equipe Paule Ka on the opening day’s team time-trial.

It has been a strong summer for Banks, who finished second to fellow Yorkshire rider Lizzie Deignan at the Grand Prix De Plouay in France in August.

Banks also rode for Great Britain in the European Road Race Championships at the end of August.

Banks moved to Sheffield to attend university over a decade ago and has stayed in South Yorkshire.

She wore the Queen of the Mountains jersey at last year’s Tour de Yorkshire.
