Backovic becomes only the fourth player in club history to rack up nine consecutive seasons after agreeing to play with the Sharks in the 2020-21 season.

The 6ft 3in British-Serbian small forward, who is only 23, said: “It’s great to be back, we left a lot of unfinished business on the court due to the pandemic.

“This club is home for me and has always been a such big part of my life. I’m ready to get back for another season as a Shark.”

Backovic has been a member of the squad for the last 281 games, having debuted as a teen at Easter 2013.

Head coach Atiba Lyons deems Backovic integral to the club’s fortunes: “Marko is one of those guys that is part of the fabric of the Sharks.

“He has literally been a part of the club since birth, a life-long supporter. On and off the court he does so much for this team, we’re excited to have him back.”
