McCarthy, who has playing privileges on the European Challenge Tour, has made the more local 2020protour his home since competitive golf re-emerged from lockdown in June.

The 32-year-old Moortown professional has three wins to his name from 18 tournaments on a circuit that has given him and many other male and female professionals and amateurs, a chance to play this summer.

He is second on the money list behind Nick Poppleton, and although he failed to trouble the leaderboard at the circuit’s latest stop at Rotherham Golf Club yesterday, he hopes the 2020protour is here to stay.

“With everything that’s happened it’s been a good time for them to get going,” said McCarthy. “Everyone’s been at home, everyone needed something to play in, and it’s worked out well for them.

“There’s been some good incentives, and it’s kept a lot of people playing. I think it’s got a bright future.”

The number of entries has dwindled since more and more tours came back but the race to finish top of the 2020protour at Huddersfield on October 5 is heating up.

Certainly no one could stop George Woolgar yesterday, the Chesterfield professional winning by five shots from Matt Killen after a round of 63.

Poppleton shared third with high amateur George Mason (Wath) while Aaron Cox after an eagle on the 10th and Jack Leversidge (Abbeydale, amateur) shared sixth.
