The 50-year-old from Leeds cruised to a 4-0 win over former world No 2 Tony Knowles in Sheffield late on Thursday night.

And Lines’s prize is a match against White, a six-time Crucible finalist in the World Championship, and the 58-year-old remains one of snooker’s iconic players.

“Playing Jimmy at the Crucible, it’s what you dream of as a snooker player,” said Lines, the 2017 World Seniors champion. “I am really looking forward to it.

“I have played him a couple of times over the years. Jimmy is still a good player, and will be hard to beat.

“It’s about trying to get your head around playing a legend. Even though they are not playing as well as they used to, they still have a status in the game.

“If you get over that, and just play, you have a good chance. But not everyone can do that. You see a lot of people fold.

“Even myself, I know I have been on Tour a few years, Jimmy is an icon, a true legend,” added Lines, who first turned professional in 1991.

The pair have played each other five times over the years, after first meeting in the 1997 Thailand Open.

White has a 4-1 record, with Lines’s only win coming in the 2008 Bahrain Championship.

Lines, the world No 117 who still plays on the main Tour, was always in control against Knowles - the 65-year-old, a three-time Crucible semi-finalist — knocking in an impressive break of 85 in the second frame.

“I missed a few chances to kill the game off, but happy to just get over the line,” said Lines. “Hopefully I can play a little bit better tomorrow.”

Lines is not the only Yorkshireman in the quarter-finals, with Bradford’s Wayne Cooper progressing earlier in the day.

The 42-year-old beat London-based Gary Filtness 4-2 in his first-round match.

Cooper plays Irishman Michael Judge, who knocked out Dennis Taylor 4-1, on Friday.

Seven-time Crucible champion Stephen Hendry won three successive frames to beat Derbyshire’s Nigel Bond 4-3.
