KARL Burke has another exciting young filly in Spright who secured her third win from five career starts on day two of the St Leger festival at Doncaster.

She was the beneficiary of a well-judged ride from the under-rated Clifford Lee in the British Stallion Studs EBF “Carrie Red” Fillies’ Nursery.

Running in the colours of the trainer’s wife Elaine, and leading breeder and bloodstock agent David Redvers of Qatar Racing fame, the aptly-named Spright hails from a stable which has enjoyed multiple Group One success with the now retired Laurens and, more recently, this year’s Royal Ascot heroine Dandalla.

Leyburn-based Burke said: “I thought she was well handicapped and I twisted the arms of the owners, including David Redvers, to let her run.

“David definitely wanted to go for a Listed race to try to get some black type and make her more sellable, but it would have broken my heart to leave a £50,000 race behind without having a runner in it.

“We’ll definitely give her a shot at black type now. She’s in the Redcar Two Year Old Trophy (October 3), and there’s also the Bosra Sham at Newmarket at the end of October.”

Earlier 2019 St Leger winner Logician maintained his unbeaten record with a facile victory on his return in the Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Conditions Stakes.

Facing only one rival in Charlie Appleby’s Mythical Magic, the grey Logician was back on track almost a year to the day since his Classic success on Town Moor.

Once Frankie Dettori asked Logician to quicken in front of empty stands as the Ladies Day meeting went ahead behind closed doors, his sole rival could not go with him.

Winning trainer John Gosden said: “We’re very happy. He came here very composed and I always think in a race like that, go and set your own pace.

“He’s having what I call a nice blow, not a stressful blow. You’ve got to remember this horse had two months in intensive care and I can have nothing but praise for the veterinarians at the Newmarket Equine Clinic for saving his life twice, so that he can be here today.

“We’re very pleased to see him back – it’s been a long road. I’d like to see how he is in the next 10 days before even thinking about another race.”

The trainer and Dettori then teamed up with Indigo Girl to land the bet365 May Hill Stakes – a stepping stone to next year’s Classics.

She defied a slow start and signs of greenness to triumph with Dettori enthusing: “She’s from a talented family. Everything is in the right place and I really like her. She’s got a good future and is two from two and a Group Two winner. Fingers crossed she can go all the way.”
