Otley 34 Newbury 14: Quigley in for sparkling hat-trick

Otley required five league points from this match and by the 34th minute this was accomplished through a devastating display of rugby.

They went on to ensure that Newbury left with nothing, restricting them to a couple of tries, scored in the last minute of each half.

Curtis Wilson went over within a minute, Otley's kick-off being booted back deep before the ball quickly handed to the winger, who evaded a number of tackles and outpaced the cover to score.

More was to come, full-back Ryan Duckett came into the line on half-way to burst through to the posts but was recalled for a forward pass. Then the pack, showing their new-found confidence, drove from a lineout where prop Colin Quigley broke off to surge over.

Six minutes later, he was there for a repeat, stand-in kicker Stephen Depledge converting both.

Stealing a Newbury throw, Otley kicked ahead and followed up in numbers to regain possession and the ball was spun around and No 6 Alex Ball crossed.

A tap penalty by Depledge had them back on the attack and this time Joe Barker, a back-row by trade but playing magnificently at fly-half, finished off.

At last gaining a foothold, Newbury stretched the home defence and No 10 Mitchell Burton got over and converted to give his side a lift.

They raised their game after the break but without any success, though they did restrict Otley to just one further score, Quigley completing a hat-trick on 73 minutes. Right on time, hooker Craig McGrath burst over, Burton converting.
